Movie Menus: "The English Patient"

By:   Carl Hanson

All-day "English Patient Feast"--breakfast, lunch, and dinner!

This one has it all--war, mystery, betrayal, doomed love, a great soundtrack, and stunning cinematography. No wonder it took the trophy for Best Picture.

Shh, the Movie's Starting!

Who is this mystery man that the Allies discovered badly burned and barely clinging to life in the dessert of Northern Africa? An offhand entry on a medical chart designates him "the English Patient," but is he really English? Or a German spy? And who is "K" in his book? Against a backdrop of World War II, the mystery is slowly revealed through finely crafted flashbacks that unknot an elaborate tale of love and loss.

    The English Patient Menu

The menu here spans breakfast, lunch, snack time, and dinner. Hey, it's a long movie. Besides, when you're done and you've pieced together the mystery, you'll want to watch it all over again.

Movie quotes (to set the mood) and the breakfast menu:

Hana: "There's a man downstairs. He brought us eggs. He might stay."
Almasy: "Why? Can he lay eggs?"

Almasy: "I'm just a bit of toast, my friend."

Movie quotes and the lunch menu:

Almasy: "And the story, well, there's this Hungarian count. He's a wanderer. He's a fool. And for years he's on some kind of a quest for--who knows what."

Katharine: "Water, with fish in it. Hedgehogs, I love hedgehogs. Marmite. Baths."

Katharine: "Am I K in your book? I think I must be."

A movie quote and intermission snack:

Almasy: "Why are people so happy when they collide with someone from the same place? What happened in Montreal when you passed a man in the street? Did you invite him to live with you?"

Movie quotes and the dinner menu:

Major Muller: "You are a Canadian spy working for the Allies. Code-name Moose."

Amasy: "Let me tell you about winds. There is a whirlwind from southern Morocco, the aajej, against which the fellahin defend themselves with knives."

Almasy: "It's a very plum plum."

Kip: "What I do object to, is your drinking all my condensed milk."
