Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Milwaukee may best be known for its breweries and gritty industry, but it’s also a city that’s remaking itself to capitalize on its scenic waterways. Lake Michigan borders the city to the east, while the RiverWalk district’s promenades and restaurants bustle during the summer. Milwaukeeans are often viewed as being the descendants of German immigrants, but African-Americans make up an equal portion of the city’s inhabitants. Milwaukee loves a party, from its Summerfest music festival to German Fest, Irish Fest, Armenian Fest, Greek Fest, et al. The Wisconsin State Fair takes place in nearby West Allis, and more than 350,000 cream puffs are sold during this Dairyland celebration. Don’t miss venerable Milwaukee institutions on Old World Third Street, like Mader’s Restaurant and Usinger’s sausage. Sanford Restaurant, founded by chef Sanford D’Amato, is considered to be one of the best in the Midwest. Local microbreweries and brew pubs satisfy contemporary taste sensibilities while connecting the city to its brewing past.

About me:
I'm a mother, student, full-time worker. I have 4 kids and husband all with large appetites to feed at home everyday. Eating out everyday is not an option for us since it can be very costly due to our family size. I love to try new recipes and teach others how to cook.

Vanilla Ice Cream I

Reviewed on Aug. 19, 2008 by naples34102
For the creamiest, most luxurious ice cream, cook this custard in the traditional method, bringing as close to 185 degrees as possible, but do not let it come to a boil. Remove from heat, strain, then add vanilla. Cool in ice bath, then chill mixture several hours or overnight before churning. Almost as good, and certainly a lot easier because you don't have to cook it, is simply to beat the eggs till light and fluffy, about 1-2 minutes, add the sugar, beat another minute, then add to cream mixture with vanilla. Whichever way you choose to do it, don't whip the cream. This will cause a lot of "overrun," or air volume, which you don't want. (This is what the inexpensive brands of ice cream do) I wanted a clean vanilla ice cream flavor, so I eliminated the lemon juice and, since I like my "frozen custard" super rich, I used half and half instead of the milk. So long as the step of whipping the cream is skipped, this is excellent ice cream.

This was very tasty. I'm always looking for different recipes to try and I am glad I tried this. I did add some carrots for some color.

Simple Beef Flavored Gravy

Reviewed on Aug. 19, 2008 by missdrea
This was so easy and quick. Great for when you need a last minute gravy and much cheaper and better tasting than store bought. I use the paste instead of the boullion in my house, so I used that in this recipe. Obviously its not the best gravy I've ever had but for its convenience factor I'm giving it 5 stars.
