INGREDIENTS (Nutrition)

  • 1 cup dates, pitted and chopped
  • 3/4 cup boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips, melted
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

DIRECTIONS

  1. Combine chopped dates, boiling water, and soda. Stir, and allow to cool.
  2. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and nuts.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat together egg, salt, sugar, and vanilla. Blend together melted chocolate and melted butter or margarine; stir into batter. Stir in date mixture. Add flour mixture, and stir to mix. Scrape into a greased 9 x 5 inch loaf pan.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 1 hour, or until it tests done. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Remove from pan.
